My Bookish Life: October Reading Wrap Up

October is ending in a few days so I thought I would go ahead and post my reading wrap up. I did complete all of the books on my TBR list so I feel good about that. I might even try to read 5 books next month!     The first book I read this month was Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. I thought it was an ok start to the series . I have read better books by Dean Koontz though. I ended up giving the book 3.5 stars.       After that I read The Long Walk by Stephen King. I had been wanting to read it for a long time. I ended up thinking some of the characters blended together though. It still wasn't a bad read though so I gave it a 3.5 .     The last book I read this month was My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent. I wasn't expecting to like this book at all but, it ended up being a better book then the synopsis made it sound like it was going to be. Some parts were also creepier than I thought something in a YA book would...

My Bookish Life Book Review: My Soul To Take

Title: My Soul To Take Author: Rachel Vincent      Genre: YA  Pages :  280 pgs      Rating: 3 stars Synopsis:  She doesn't see dead people but... She senses when someone near her is about to die. When that happens, a force beyond her  compels her to scream literally.      My thoughts on the book:  I thought it was ok. I am giving it 3 stars. I did think that it was a better book than what the synopsis makes it seem like. Some parts were creepier than I expected a young adult book to be.                                                                             However, I did find that some parts of the story were completely predictable which is one of the books biggest faults. Plus , I fou...

My Bookish Life Book Review : The Long Walk by Stephen King

Title: The Long Walk Author: Stephen King                  Genre: Horror   Pages: 321                  Rating: 3.5 stars Synopsis: In the near future, when America has become a police state, one hundred boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Among them is sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty, and he knows the rules- keep a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping . Three warnings and you're out - permenantly.  My thoughts on the book: I thought it was decent especially since it was actually the first novel Mr. King wrote. It got a little monotonous just because the story is essential following a very long walk. However, it still wasn't that bad.      You can see some of Mr. King's future story telling style in the book which is part of what made it an alright...

My Bookish Life : Book Haul

So I actually purchased some books today. All of these were purchased from a thrift store with the exception of Homebody. Overall , I spent about $6.50 for all of them.                     Synopsis: Anne Rice, creator of the Vampire Lestat, the Mayfair witches and the amazing worlds they inhabit, now gives us the first in a new series of novels linked together by fledgling vampire David Talbot, who has set out to become a chronicler of his fellow Undead.    Reason I bought it: I am a huge fan of Anne Rice. I absolutely love her Vampire series and I didn't have this one. Plus, it was only 25 cents! Synopsis: "This isn't just about getting me hot till my juices run clear, and then a little rest. There's pulling , jerking, stuffing, trusting... he promises we'll start out slow, with wine and a good oiling ... Holy crap." So begins the initiation of a young free-range chicken at ...

My Bookish Life Book Review : Odd Thomas

Title : Odd Thomas Author : Dean Koontz       Genre: Thriller/Mystery (wasn't to sure how to place this one also thought about YA)       Pages: 446     Rating : 3.5   Synopsis: Sometimes the souls that seek out Odd want justice. Occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. But this time it's different. A stranger come to Pico Mundo, accompanied by a horde of hyena-like shades who herald an imminent catastrophe . Aided by his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn , and an unlikely community of allies that includes the king of Rock 'n' Roll , Odd will race against time to thwart the gathering evil.       My thoughts on the book: It was ok. It wasn't the best Dean Koontz book I've read but, it was still good enough to make me want to check out more of the books in the series. I also found some parts to just be really really funny.     I did think the ending was one of the best ...

My Bookish Life Book Review: Carrie

Title: Carrie  Author: Stephen King            Genre: Horror  Pages: 253             Rating : 5 stars   Synopsis: A modern classic, Carrie introduced a distinctive new voice in American fiction, Stephen King. The story of a misunderstood high school girl Carrie White and her extraordinary telekinectic powers and her violent rampage of revenge. Carrie remains one of the most barrier-breaking and shocking stories of all time.    My thoughts on the book: This was a reread for me . I was reading it to complete the debuts novel challenge on the Banned Books Week Bingo board. Even though this was a reread I still enjoyed the story.     I think the fact that you can go back and reread a lot of King's stuff and still enjoy it really says a lot about his writing skills. He has a very distinctive voice and way of telling a story. The way he tells his st...

My Bookish Life Update

Unfortunately I couldn't finish the Banned Books Week Readathon on time. Other things kinda took over . However, I should be finishing the books sometime today or tomorrow.   I have a surprise for the blog which I really wanted to debut today since it's the first of the month. I made a TBR jar for the blog! It's filled with both books I own that I haven't read yet and books from my Goodreads TBR list!    How this is going to work is each month  I'm going to draw two or maybe three times from the jar. If I draw a book that's part of a series and I haven't read the first book in the series then that book goes back in the jar and I read the first book in the series. If I can't finish all of the books in a month they go back into the jar.  So counting my two picks from the jar that makes my Oct. TBR the following books: 1. The Long Walk by Stephen King ( just because I want to read it ) 2. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz (need to re...
