My Bookish Life: I Try Book Food

Hello everybody! While I'm doing my laundry I thought I would go ahead and post a new segment that I  want to do. I think it will be once a month and what I want to do is try making food from books (not cook books) . After that I make a post about it and give you guys the recipe and review how it turned out.

So with all that being said over the weekend I made the first recipe . I am reading the book Wizard and Glass by Stephen King which part of The Dark Tower series and I found a recipe for Gunslinger burritos from the Dark Tower series. So I decided that was going to be the first book recipe I tried.

   Ingredients:
8 ounces venison,  backstrap, or other lean game meat. You can substitute this. I just used a steak.
19 pinches (1 tsp salt)
1 tbsp lard or other animal fat
1/4 cup wild onion or two green onions
1 tsp wild garlic or 1 clove regular garlic minced
1 cup porcini or chanterelle mushrooms
2 large collard green leaves, stems removed.

Directions:
1. Brine the meat with the salt and set it aside at room temperature for 1 hour. After that shake off the steaks and dry them with a paper towel.

2. Preheat the grill to hot. Then cook the steaks for 15 to 20 minutes or until they are medium rare.

3. Melt the lard or other animal fat (I used butter) in a skillet and then add the onions and garlic and saute until the onions are soft. Add the mushrooms and then cook until they are brown and juicy.

4. Once the steak has rested slice it into 1/2 inch slices.

5. To construct The Gunslinger Burrito roll out each collard green leaf and spread them out. Put your steak and mushroom and onion mixture on the collard green leaves. Then you roll them up like a burrito.

My thoughts on the food: I loved this recipe ! I will for sure be making it again . It was easy to make and it tasted absolutely amazing!

I think probably decently healthy too. You do use things like lard or butter but you grill the meat so it isn't greasy. Plus , your shell is a collard green leaf so that is for sure healthier than a regular soft taco shell.

It was easy to make. Once again I absolutely loved the taste. I have been wanting to try one since I first read the Dark Tower series and I was not disappointed with how this turned out taste wise. This recipe for sure gets a five star rating !

That's it for this update. I will be back tomorrow with a book haul post! If you like my content please follow my blog! If you have any books with food in them you would like for me to try please leave them in the comments. I hope you all have a nice day and I will talk to you all tomorrow.
